IVF-SARI- Gender Selection
at Saint Mary Fertility Center

Clear images and colors

Gender selection is desired by some couples who have children of one gender and want to experience the joy of raising a child of the opposite sex. Saint Mary Fertility Center is happy to offer Ericsson’s Albumin method for gender selection. Although there are several means to achieve this goal, including pre- implantation genetic diagnosis, we have chosen to offer a method that has a high degree of the desired outcome with minimal risk to the sperm and no risk to the embryo.

The Ericsson method was pioneered and patented by Dr. Ronald Ericsson, and has been in use since the mid-1970s. The Ericsson method is based on the assumption that Y-sperm swim faster than X-sperm. Sperm are placed in a test tube atop a "column" of increasingly thicker layers of albumin, and allowed to swim down into the solution. After a certain time period has elapsed, only the fastest sperm should have been able to penetrate to the bottom layer. The Ericsson Method of gender selection may be more preferable to many families and medical ethicists because it sidesteps the issue of creating embryos that may be discarded simply because they were not of the desired gender. Dr. Ericsson’s published success rates using this method demonstrate approximately a 70% chance of conceiving with the desired gender when pregnancy occurs.
